What the machine sees

MRI uses powerful magnets and radio waves — no radiation — to build detailed images of soft tissue. That makes it exceptionally good at spotting solid masses in organs: brain, lungs, liver, kidneys, pancreas, prostate, ovaries, and more. A screening full-body protocol typically covers head to pelvis in roughly an hour, and radiologists (increasingly AI-assisted) review the images for anything that shouldn't be there.

What it's good at — and not

Strengths: detecting solid tumors early, often before symptoms; visualizing the brain and spine; no ionizing radiation, so yearly repeats are safe.
